| Glasses for the Masses By: Wes Benoit Over the years, I have taken an approach of doing my homework before a purchase. I always give my feedback and share my research with my friends at PACE Outfitters, in the hopes that they will be able to save their valued clients some grief, through my experience. I was in doing research towards my next purchase, when they mentioned how much they appreciated the feedback. The bulb went off in my head, and I mentioned that I had been playing with writing. I suggested that I could write product reviews for an outdoors club newsletter (Marco), of which I am a member. Turns out they are developing a Web site and catalog, ... so the joke has become an experiment! I'll write a review, send it to the editor, and if it gets published I become an official writer. So here goes: When I developed a constant migraine level headache, and needed prescription glasses, I did research into how the different tints affected my color perception (I am a scenic artist). Then, I designed two sets of glasses with the help of an optician, so I could handle working days and driving nights. A couple of years ago, I happened to get a thorn in my eye while mowing. I realized that I had to find a proper set of “safety” goggles or glasses. I researched what the military and law enforcement communities were using, and once I found the style, I had to choose among the available lenses rather than using my own design. The daytime lenses work great, but the driving glasses are a disappointment. "The Silver Steel lenses are designed for motorcycle riding" The glasses are Wiley X, JP-2’s. They have a goggle type insert and impact resistant lenses. The Filter 3 lenses are great sunglasses. The Silver Steel lenses are designed for motorcycle riding, both day and night, and are gradient from top to bottom. They work on the same principle as bi-focal lenses do. If you lower your head, you get more tint, and if you raise your head, you get less. I am just spoiled from my own design of a double gradient with the clearest area being straight ahead. Next time, I’ll go for their transition type of lens. The fact that I have very limited funds doesn't stop me from doing these things; it just limits my ability to do them. Many friends and family members that have some of the same interests ask for and follow my advice due to this trait. Whether it be dog training and care, work boots, jeep accessories, flashlights, firearms, or paints... I share my perspective with them. Thus saving research time and also the experience of the things that definitely didn't work. My friends at PACE Outfitters in Altamonte have been very helpful. They can meet not only equipment and clothing needs; they can help with all of your shooting needs too. Just tell them Wes sent you, and maybe I’ll get to keep writing! Next time …performance wear. Under Armour or 5.11’s muscle mapping shirt. Maybe both. |
